Kommunal Kustom Build, Week 4

The teardown begins….
We’re four weeks into our Konnections Kommunal Build and the teams are getting stuck into the teardown; cataloguing parts they’re going to keep, scavenging what they can from the Kommune cupboards and drawing up a list of bits they need to order. Greasy grins all round. Over the next couple of weeks it’s vital for both teams to have their tank, seat and subframe designs locked in before the bikes are fully dismantled, never to be seen in the same form again!
Before the deep clean can commence, it appears the adv scrambler team may have hit a snag. After some ignition system troubleshooting from Kyle, it looks like the magneto has given up the ghost, which isn’t exactly a surprise for a bike from 1984 that’s been sitting idle for a few years. Well you know what they say- it’s not an adventure until something goes awry! Michael, full of solutions as ever, is on the case making a few important calls to a few important people. Watch this space.

Leah and Tookey from the flat tracker team are carrying the torch, quite literally, in the welding and fabrication department and it looks like some pipes are taking shape behind the orange screen. Rowan’s been busy rounding up a shopping list from the adv scrambler team and Brendan and Lenny are locking in the wish-list their end. It’s worth noting that this project started out with a modest budget to fund one build and now we’re rolling out two customs, so the teams are employing the old adage “buy less, choose well” and utilising the collection of miscellaneous parts around the workshop that would otherwise gather dust. Meaning, you don’t have to spend a fortune if you’re willing to clean and scrub and polish and repurpose what’s already at your fingertips.
Aside from the build itself, there’s been a lot of chatter this week about the eagerly anticipated High Country trip at the end of the month. It’ll be our first proper adventure of the year and a terrific way for the Konnections crew to bond over some moto meditation on the open road. There’s still a few places left for anyone who’s keen on a 4 day cruise through some of Victoria’s most cinematic alpine landscapes. Full details here.
Keep your eyes peeled for the news and views from Week 5 and as always, big thanks to the legend @Jake Simkin for the images! Check this page if you’re keen to learn more about our Kommune Konnections program funded by the DGR and Movember.
