“It doesn’t matter why you want to build a custom bike, it’s enough that you have decided to. – Gary Inman, How To Build a Motorcycle
Wrenching with your mates on a custom bike is the epitome of what our moto community is about. Form, function and friendship: Kommune to a tee. When many greasy hands come together to get a dream across the line, it’s poetry in motion, so in this spirit we’re rolling out our first Kommunal Kustom: a design + build project every Thursday night for 10 weeks.
We’ve got a NX650 Dominator donor, and the team has voted on a Rust-to-Radical Flat Tracker inspired build.
All ages, genders, members and non-members are welcome and you don’t need to be a mechanical genius either- the more diverse the better. Maybe you’ve never had a crack at a custom build but you lay awake at night thinking about it. Maybe a lack of time and resources has stunted your custom dreams (pretty sure most of us know that feeling). Perhaps you’ve got a valuable skill and can mentor others to keep the project flowing along nicely. If so, we want to hear from you.
What this project really comes down to is forging solid bonds with like-minded people and channeling our collective enthusiasm into a unique and rideable machine that we can all be proud of. We’ve already decided that the Dominator’s destiny is to become the first bike in our Member’s Fleet, so if you’ve got a mate in town who needs a ride, or you need a dirty weekend away, or you just want to get a feel for a Tracker the Dominator is yours to borrow- it will belong to all members.
This build is a part of our Konnections Project and we thinks its pretty spesh; Konnections is our involvement in The Social Connections Challenge, a collaboration between the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride and Movember aimed at tackling social isolation and improving men’s mental health within our moto community. However, Konnections isn’t just ‘for men’ because we recognise that everyone is impacted in some way when one link in the chain ain’t quite right, so our gatherings, rides and events are for everyone, every time.
Kommune will always be a DIY space first and foremost but nowadays we’re much more than a workshop. We’ve seen firsthand the impact of poor mental health and social isolation, so we’re focusing on engaging and supporting our community by creating more opportunities for more of us to get together more often, on and off the bike.
Join our mindful moto movement
Here we are, Kommune Konnections officially fired up. Our mindful moto movement funded by the good folks at the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride and Movember as part of their Social Connections Challenge, aimed at improving the mental wellbeing and social connectedness of our community.
We’d love it if you register below and become an offical participant, apart from instant good karma (brace yourself, life’s about to get real rad real quick), your registration is super important to the future of Konnections. Plus, you’ll be the first to get invites to events with limited capacity, which means not MotoFomo. It’s just one simple form below. Easy as.
You don’t need to be a Kommune member to register and you don’t need to register to attend our events.
Being an official participant means you’ll be able to deliver feedback to our assessors who need to know that our events and gatherings are actually helping to improve your sense of wellbeing- they don’t just take our word for it!
Like we said, everyone is welcome to come hang at Konnections gatherings but registered participants have the ability to shape what Konnections is now and what it could be in the future. Your say counts.
